The Angelfish @ GCA

The Cleveland Aquarium has a vertical stand-alone tank that has several different type of Angelfish. These are freshwater fish so I have surmised that they are of the species Pterophyllum which translates to ‘winged leaf’. These fish have a passion for darting around the tank in spirals and are a hassle to get your camera focused on. Angelfish are also monogamous and I’ve read that if their partner dies, the other will usually not seek out another companion. The more you shoot, the more you know..

Scorpionfish

The Cleveland Aquarium has quite a few Scorpaenidae but I’m not quite sure what species this one is despite browsing hundreds of photos of them on the internet. Scorpionfish can change colors and have algae growing on their back to blend into the surroundings as they lay-in-wait for a fish to wander by so they can suck it into their mouths. The animated Gif above was created from several frames of a second of movement that you may have to wait a few minutes to notice.

Yellow Headed Jawfish

The Opistognathus aurifrons AKA Yellow-Headed Jawfish was probably the most enjoyable fish to watch while I was at the Cleveland Aquarium. The small fish burrows itself in sand that it has dug out using its mouth as a wet-vac of sorts and then spits it out [see above gif]. I observed these fish use that spitting method to fend off anything that comes near its burrow. One instance, one of these fish seemed to be spitting sand into one of its peers burrows as that fish was clearing sand from it. I’m not sure if it was to spite his neighbor or if he was just expressing his displeasure of the proximity that the fish was building their burrow.

haight street

I visited SanFran February 24 + 25 and I had a great time. We did a lot of walking so many of my shots are on the streets or through the Golden Gate Park.
